I recently recieved a 1980 Remington 700 BDL .22-250 from my father. It had an older Redfield 4-12 on it but the side turret fell off while trying to sight it in along with having a scratch on the ocular lens.  Anyways I'm looking to replace it with a new scope. I want an all around scope to shoot anything from prairie dogs to antelope. I have my choices narrowed to the Diamondback HP 4-16x42 and the Viper HS 4-16x44.  My main question is, is it worth the extra $200 or so dollars for the Viper or will the Diamondback do 99% of what the Viper will for less money? Thanks for any help.

Don't know about the scope but 22-250 isn't an Antelope gun.

Just mho.

I have both of those scopes, and there's at least $200 difference in the two.  Hands down I'd go with the viper.

Cool thanks for the advice, I'm leaning viper and looking for more reasons to keep leaning that way ha. And ya I realize a .22-250 is on the very light end of the spectrum for pronghorn (I use my .243) but guys do use them. I guess what I was getting at is I want an fairly multi-purpose scope for a variety of hunting scenarios. Another question what reticle should I go with? The V-Plex or the Dead Hold BDC?
Thanks again.

You have the Diamondback HP? or the regular Diamondback?

Diamondback HP is pretty new, so I am curious what the feedback on those is.  What don't you like about it?

I'm sorry, Ilya, I have the original diamondback and the Viper HS, not the diamondback HP.  My apologies to the OP.  My views on the Viper HS vs. the original diamondback are that if the difference is 200, pay it and don't look back.  I don't have a basis to compare the HS to the Diamondback HP.

I'm not recommending the 22 center fires for deer & antelope, and in some places I doubt it's even legal to hunt with them, however, I've seen a pile of deer put in the freezer by the 222 Rem, 22-250 and the 220 Swift fed a diet of Nosler's solid base bullets.  Also, I think it worthwhile to mention the 5.56/ 223 was conceived with 150 pound varmints in mind.
Shooting a rabbit just above the tail with a 22-250 usually results in a full gainer...
