I just got a 222 rem mag and am going to have someone start reloading for it. So far I have only shot 55gr factory rem shells. They have shot well. I think I will stay with the 55 gr bullets an try and stay about 3200 fps. My question is I would like to try faster loads but I don't want to burn out my barrel. What is a save speed to stay with that won't effect my barrel. Thanks

Hey cleo
Speed is not really what makes a caliber a barrel burner, although it is kinda related. The powder capacity of the case and the correlated need for a greater quantity of slow burning powder is the culprit. This chart should not be taken as literally but as an illustration of the tendency of slower burning powders in certain calibers to do damage to throats
For example an appropriate powder for the 222 Remington Magnum might be IMR4064 for the 55 gr bullet and that would put you around 3000 shots, assuming normal shooting practices (no rapid fire, not shooting the barrel when hot, normal cleaning etc).
What twist barrel is it?

What is the rifle going to be used for? How much do you shoot it? I guess I don't worry about it unless my groups really start opening up and I haven't changed my loads or any other factor. If you put a couple thousand rounds down range every year, it would be something to think about. If you only put a couple hundred down range, I wouldn't worry about it for a while.

the barrel life on a 222 mag is about the same as a 204, maybe a little more, as the 222 mag is the parent case for the 204, either way both are easily 2x a 22-250. both the 204 and 222 mag take about 30 to 40 rds to get about as hot as a 22-250 will with 10to 15 rds.
