Always a concern and question on the OT and usually breaks down into several catagorys. Plinking, hunting, target etc. I was looking for something for long range shooting and needed the following. Turrets had to be easily adjustable, good repeatablility, with easy calculation, and the reticle had to be good on old 12 gauge shotgun shells, at 100 yds,  on tennis and golf balls at 200 yd, and pop cans at 300 yds. After trying a mk4 6.5x20, and various 3x10 types it become apparent that the perspective was lost. The perception I wanted was to have target and object field size at 300 yds approx. the same as approx. 1000 yds. An additional issue arising with the 22 is shots under 100 yds and the need, as an example, to crank the turrets 4x as much for the same movement.
So just to try it-- I mounted an IOR 4x CQB with a 308 drop elevation dial on the savage grabbed some subsonic and set up targets at known distances. The reticle has 10 mil in drop and the turret is calibrated to 1000 yds, (optimistic at best).
After setting the scope elevation turret to zero at 25 yds.
1 turned out to be 50yds, 3-75,4-100, 5 150, 7-200 and 10 300 yds.
Refinements can be made using the mil holdover in the reticle.
This set up has the advantage of not needing a 20 moa mount on the 22 and the scope has enough movement for 300 yds.
To test, 6-9 in steel targets (head shots) were set up at 25, 75, 100, 150, 200 and 300 yds.
works great!
