Hello to all, just got a savage predator hunter looking for a scope for varmits and a little target shooting. I like the leopold vx 2  4-12 but not sure about the adjustable objective I've never used one before. been told any magnification over 9/10 you need one would it be somethng you have to mess with all the time and cost you a shot while hunting or is it just something to adjust for long range targets  any thoughts would be great

What is your price range?  What are the likely ranges you are going to encounter?

There are a lot of good scopes out there some with Adjustable Objective and some with Side-Focus.  Both serve the same function: getting rid of parallax and focusing the image. For shooting at small targets a bit further out, AO or Side-Focus is a good idea, and you will find yourself adjusting it as you engage targets at varying distances.

500 bucks max Coyote hunting the range could be real close but I guess what Im looking for is advise about the adjustable objective at what range do you have to start to focus the scope  could you leave it at a setting for hunting anywhere from 25 to 150 yards and not have to focus on quick shots then be able to take your time to focus the scope at the range for shots at longer ranges is that how it works? thanks for the reply

If you are using fairly high magnification, you will need to fiddle with parallax adjustment a bit more.  If you tend to use moderate magnification, then you do not need to use it much.  If you need to take quick shots, just set it to the lowest magnification or thereabouts and you should not need to mess with parallax too much.

For the ranges that you are talking about, I am not sure you need a high magnification scopes with parallax adjustment.  What you may need though is a very visible reticle and good glass.

Trijicon Accupoint 3-9x40 would probably be an ideal choice, but it is a bit over your budget.

Another good choice is Bushnell Elite 4200 2.5-10x50 with #4 reticle and illuminated dot.

If you insist on higher magnification, both Elite 4200 4-16x40 and Sightron S2 Big Sky 4-16x42 are good options, as is Vortex Viper 4-12x40.

All of these options will run circles around Leupold VX-II.

Im might be over doing it on the mag range my weaver gs goes to 10 and I've shot pretty far with that but I dont have a bigger scope than that and thought with a flat shooting gun like a 204 it would be cool to try something bigger maybe a12 14 or 16 but like I said before I dont know exactly how the adjustable objective works and if it woould turn into a pain to hunt with maybe I should rethink it

Thanks for the info guys I geuss what Id like to know is what would be a good scope for hunting 70% of the tme and target 30% I dont want something too big to be useful for hunting and something fun for target shooting at longer ranges than 9/10 power would work at Id like to push out the ranges (target) to 300-400 yards to see what my max long range could be, and yes I know 9/10 can be used at long range

I received a .204 with a Bushnell Legend 5-15x40 as a gift.  I hadn't been a huge Bushnell fan but this scope is impressive even at twice the price.  If I was buying for myself I'd certainly consider the 3200 or 4200.  Having the ability to go to 15x is pretty cool, especially if you shooting P dogs.
