I'm seriously considering purchasing a 20 gauge H&R USH for deer hunting.  Will a 20 gauge have enough knock-down power, or should I step up to a 12 gauge?

The 20 will give you adequate power as long as you keep your range limitations in mind.  Out to 100 yds you should still be around the 1000 ft/lb mark for a 23/4,  5/8 oz sabot or if you move up to a 3in shell you would be good for 14oo ft/lb or so.

The 23/4 inch shell  makes about the same energy figures as my 44 mag with 240 gr bullets and it has taken lots of deer.

The 20 ga. is definitely a deer stopper. The H&R can be very accurate. I had a 12 ga. for several years. It was a thumper for sure. Good luck.

Give Hornady SST's a try. I have an H/R 20 ga and it has been very consistent and certainly has plenty of oomph for a 150 yd deer gun.
