I am almost set on the VXR Patrol for my AR15, but I am looking for a long range scope for my AR10. I am loking for something in the 2000 dollar range with an illuminated reticle.

I was looking into the Mark 6 3-18 with the H-58 reticle. I was also looking into a nightforece. What are your thoughts.

I usually read and don't post much. The H58 reticle is for the most part crazy! To put it in my buddy's words, " That reticle in a quality scope on an AR10 would give a whole lot of people a very bad day"! The reason I am saying this is a Special Group took a class by the manufacturer for a week just to learn how to use this reticle. I am not saying that you or anyone else could not figure it out, but the group of guys I am refering to have experience that most don't and i'll leave it at that. So if the H58 reticle is what you are considering, keep that in mind. I personally have a NightForce NSX 3.5-15X50 Mil-Dot in Mil adjustments. It works well and there are others out there that work great also. Thats just my set-up.

Why not look at the SWFA SS 5-20?  glass is better than the NF and the mil-quad reticle is awesome.  Illumination works as it should and its got plenty of adjustment if you decide to stretch your abilities.

Looked at Leupold's website for the H58 reticle and wow way too busy.

If you are looking at using your AR10 for closer in ranges where you need some more FOV as well as long range, I would use the NF 3.5-15. 15x is plenty for long ranges. A NF 3.5-15x50 with an NPR2 reticle is what I have on my AR10. But if just long range and FOV is not an issue I could see the SS 5-20 over the NF and save some money.

I have no opinion on the quality of the glass on the SWFA SS 5-20, only owned an earlier model SS 10X42 Tactical and for just under $300.00 it was not a bad little scope for the money. It does not compare to the NF glass, and my NF doesn't compare to my S&B PMII either. When you mentioned H58 I am assuming your looking for a reticle that your not having to adjust for every shot! Just curious......

The newer SWFA SS 10X HD's 3-9's, 1-4's, and 5-20s have much higher quality glass than the old standards.  Again the glass is better than any NF i've used in my 5-20 and this is pretty well versed that others experience the same.   NF"s glass has always been the one downfall of their scopes IMO

I always thought NF glass was pretty darn good.

Haven't compared them side by side to a Schmidt or a SS though either, but I did compare my US Optics SN-3 to a guys NXS once and it was too close for me to call.

I'm with you CT, the NXS scopes I've used have all had excellent optical performance. I haven't used the 5-20ss, yet either, though.

I agree with both of you. But I will say that I like the glass on my Swaro better. But I have not problems with my NF glass and it would not stop me from purchasing another NF.

The question was directed at the H58 reticle which I stated was very difficult to use out the box and I also made a comment of my set-up which was apparently misunderstood that I made a claim of it ( being the best)! So let me clarify my statement! I have a NF NSX on my AR10! It is very dependable and I have never had any issues in my experience with this scope and I also believe the glass should be better for this scopes price range. YES, I believe there are scopes out there with better glass however it was a comment on what I have and not what I think someone else should buy because I have one. I also commented that I have a S&B PMII! Not that you should go out and buy that either, but it was a choice after using several others and a very good choice. My suggestion is set your budget to what you can afford and look through all you can especially at late hours then you will see some major differences. Your application might be different than a guy making his personal recommendations in which case may not be best
for you!
