i was just offered an ior 1.1-4crt for about 100 bucks cheaper. it's reticle changes size with magnification(1st focal plane i think it's called)should i buy or stay away or spend the extra 100 bucks on a reticle that doesn't change?

First focal plane reticles have their uses, I would stay away from them for hunting though. I like my reticle to stay the same size on my scopes. That is just my personal preference, but a first focal plane reticle could be useful in a tactical scope.

STW speaks the truth - I have first and second focal plane scopes - the first plane are very nice for tactical scopes, but hunting scopes are usually best when second focal plane.

BTW - what price were you given for it?  $100 cheaper doesn't tell us anything - hell, if it is $100 total DON'T BUY IT - send me the name and phone number of the person selling it and I'll . . . . uhm . . . dispose of it properly for you

By the way - I have an IOR 1.1-4x26 scope with a dot reticle.  Optics are amazing (clarity, etc.) but my big gripe with it is the reticle.  It is just too damn weak - you can barely see it on the highest setting in the dark even.

I may be testing a new CQB optic soon from a company that has a pretty amazing patented reticle design with BDC and will be priced very competitvely.  I'll post it here.

IOR is a very good brand, and firs plane reticles are very good in range stimating reticles ( you can estimate distances at any scope power ) The IOR 1-4x26 have some years ago 1st plane reticle but they have a problem :The reticle of this scope  LOOKS TOO THIN WHEN IS SET AT LOW POWER , "almost invisible" if the reticle is not illuminated.

THE NEW LINE OF 1-4X26  HAVE 2 PLANE RETICLE......

I love IOR scopes but.....I think you must buy some of new line or some with heavier reticle,

The rangefinding portion is only used at max power and is designed to "go away" at low power, similar to the new Schmidt and Bender 1.1-4 Police Marksman II

Several of the distinctive, specialized reticles offered on Police/Marksman II scopes provide effective rangefinding capabilities. When objects of a known size are positioned between lines or dots within the reticle, the distance to the target can be estimated accurately at any magnification.

CQB Reticle
Designed specifically for the 1.1–4 x 20 CQB scope, this sophisticated reticle is extremely fine at low magnifications, obscuring almost none of the target, while the detailed center section becomes useable for precise rangefinding at higher magnifications.

The newest Flash Dot technology provides three different illumination levels, completely controllable in a separate turret. Stops 1 to 3 provide varying illumination intensities at very low levels, designed for use with night vision goggles. Stops 4 to 6 provide slightly higher levels of intensity to be used by the naked eye in low light conditions, allowing the shooter to determine the precise aim point against a dark target that would obscure non-illuminated reticles. Stops 7 through 11 illuminate the center dot to very high intensities. With illumination switched off, the CQB functions as a standard scope with non-illuminated crosshairs.

The detail below shows the center of the crosshairs with the FlashDot illuminated.
