Having trouble getting my .17 to group really well at 100 yards. I have maybe  2 to 3 inch groups at 100 yards with one or two fliers out of five. I think it might be a scope issue. Not sure. I have a Vortex Crossfire that I picked up off the sample list. I read about and see pictures of people grouping quarter sized groups at 100 yards. Do I just suck. ON the other hand though I can shoot qaurter inch groups with my .30-06 at 100 yards. Maybe less. Three bullets in two holes overlapping. I did it, my buddy did it and a coworker all did that yesterday. I wonder about the weight of the rifle. I added weight to the .30-06 and that helped keep it steadier. Trigger pull on the .17 is quite lacking also. That may play a big role. Anyway any pointers. Good to be back after here after a long hiatus.

Do you have another scope you can put on the 17 to see if it is a scope issue?

I would have to take a scope off another gun. If I had an extra one laying around I would do that but I am hesitant to take a scope that has already been zeroed in and is working great on another gun to do that.

unfortunately that may be the only option, good thing about it is is not season so you can just rezero later.   Another thing to check before the swap would be different ammo, check all the action screws and mounting screws for proper torque too.

Where in Indiana are you?  I have an extra scope that I know to be good.  We could mount it up and give it a shot if you're anywhere near me.

How old is the ammo?  I've chronographed some older ammo that ran anywhere from 2398 to 2710 in the same box.  It's hard to be very accurate with inconsistent ammo.  Have you tried more than 1 type or brand of ammo to see if your gun likes anything better?  What rings are you using?  Are they tight on the bases and not too tight on the scope?  Just some things to consider...

I live in Richmond indiana. The rings are not the best but they are tight, at least the last time I checked they were. The scope sits tightly in the rings. I have tape around the scope where the rings wrap around the scope. It could be the action screws but everything feels tight. The ammos sounds like a possibility. It is 20gr cci

Try a different ammo then see what it does.  Then report and we can go from there.

Ok. I will do that. I had it dialed in at one point and could hit clay targets at 125 yards consistantly but now its off. Maybe a bad batch of ammo. I see what I can do about that.

Remember that the 17 gets blown around by the wind pretty good since it is such a light bullet so maybe that is effecting your groups.  Also, I have both a light and heavy barrell 17 and the heavy barrell shoots much better groups.
