I will be getting a CZ .17 HMR rifle soon and am going to get a new scope for it. I am looking for a scope around $500 with about 10-20 max zoom and about 3-5 minimum zoom. I am currently looking at the Nikon Monarch 5-20x44SF($520), Bushnell 4200 4-16x40($480), Sightron SIII 3.5-10x44 ($580), and the Leupold VXIII 4.5-14x40 LR/T ($545)

Of those, which do you think would be the best? Taking into account clarity, price, and zoom level (keep in mind I want to be able to see .17 caliber holes out to about 225 meters)

The monarch or the 4200 should be good but a .17 is hard to see at 225 M. without a spotting scope. I use a Celestron C-90 and thats tough to see at that range.

well, i can fairly easily see .22 holes out to 35 meters and the way I figure it, with 14-20 as the max zoom, the target should appear to be 16-11.25 meters away. That is more than close enough to see the hole. Of course, the glass clarity can't be perfect and the scope zoom in real life doesn't seem to make it appear as close as my math shows.

I will certainly get a spotting scope later down the line, but for now I can only afford the gun and scope.

I have a 6-18x on mine. This is good for seeing holes at 100 yds. I think 225 is going to be a stretch. That is a pretty small hole to see without a high power spotting scope.

I agree with Trigger, 225m is along way out there, though I think its very do-able with a decent spotter.  I'd also suggest the use of splatter type targets to help.

Thanks for your advice. I'll be sure to pick up a spotting scope eventually, but for now I only have funds for a rifle, bipod, and scope. Any other opinions on which scope will be best?

The main thing to remember is the quality of glass means a lot more than power. The .17 HMR is such a good shooter I would streach for a Zeiss if possable. Check out the sample list.

well, I may be able to stretch my money to a Bushnell 6500 2-16x42 or maybe even a 4-30x50, but I don't know if I could afford a Conquest. If you know anywhere that I can get a Conquest 4.5-14x44 for less than $600, please let me know.

wow, those are pretty good prices. I might have to go for that. But, I did just find some cheap Bushnell 6500 scopes ($500 for the 2-16x42 and $656 for the 4-30x50). Now I'm not sure again

I think seeing .17 caliber holes @ 200m with a rifle scope will be a tough one.
The Nikon's and 4200's mentioned would all be solid choices.
Another fine choice that gives you extended focus range for the HMR is the Leupold 6.5-20x40. This scope is still the one I see the most at the club on target rimfire guns. I use other Leupold EFR's and I think they are great. The contrast and resoulution are very good and the scopes are excellent mechanically. http://www.swfa.com/pc-3371-295-leupold-65-20x40-vx-iii-efr-riflescope.aspx

Don't forget that swfa (the sponsor of this site) has a 110% price guarantee! If you find an identical item somewhere else for less, they will match it, and give you another 10% off. They also have the best customer service in the business. They are great people, and will take very good care of you. I would keep an eye on samplelist.com as they had some 4.5-14x44 Conquests on there a bit ago. I don't see any now, but they had a good price on them when they were on there.
