Want something tough.bright & clear. The 30mm Schmidt & Bender,Swarovski PH & Zeiss VM/V while probably being the best are out of my price range, until I buy the right lottery ticket. From what I've seen the S&B appears to be the toughest of the 3.OK that leaves us with the following scopes:

  1) Nikon Monarch Gold 1.5-6x42- Have no experience w/ these scopes, other than posts on forum. They seem to have mixed reviews.

  2) Leupold VX-3 1.75-6x32- Used to be one of the toughest they made.Would prefer a larger objective & better optics. These are personal preferences.

  3) Kahles 1.5-6x42- Have a 3-9x42 AH on a 7mm-08 that I'm happy with.It's a 1" tube.

  4) Bushnell Elite 4200 1.5-6x36-Have no experience w/ these either.Forum posts seem to like 'em.The old B&L scopes used to be tough, wonder about the new ones.Again I'd like a larger objective.

  5) Burris Euro Diamond & Signature 1.5-6x40's-Have no expierience w/ these either.Do like posi-lock idea.

The others I've disregarded : IOR,Meopta,Docter mainly due to forum reviews & lack of info.

Rifle is a light 35 Whelan. I primarily use for timber/bottoms etc.Game will be elk, trophy size hogs & bear. All shots will be 300m or less.Majority will be much less.Any suggestions on recticles etc.Am thinking along the lines of heavy plex or German #4.Thanks for your time.

Bushnell Elite 4200 is nice glass, but the shortest eye relief of the bunch.  I'd stay away from this one.

NikonMonarch Gold is nice glass with pretty good eye relief (over 4" I think) but it is a fair bit heavier than other scopes here due to a 30mm tube.

If weight does not bother you Burris Euro Diamond is available as a 1.5-6x40 and I would pick it over the Monarch Gold.

Leupold VX-3:  I am not a big fan of Leupold scopes but this would be a good choice due to flexible eye relief and decent optics.

I would add Burris Signature Safari 1.75-5x32 to the list.  This scope was designed for rifles that kick.  Eye relief is good, it is light and optics are excellent also (better than VX-3 to my eyes).

If you want to save yourself some money consider Sightron S2 1.5-6X42.  Glass is comparable to others listed here and great reputation for durability.  Also, the adjustments are probably the best of the bunch.

Personally, I would not be too preoccupied with a larger objective bell. 32mm bell is sufficient for low magnification scopes. For example with a 32mm objective lens exit pupil at 4x is 8mm which is more than your eye can use.

I'd probably go with a Burris Signature Safari, but try to look at these scopes side by side.

I do not think you really need a 40mm+ objective on a low power variable scope. My vote is for the Burris Signature Safari 1.75-5x32mm.
