Hiya guys,

Is the Sightron 12x42 Dot worth having? How does this scope stack up to lets say a comperable Vortex model?

Thanks,
gcp

Save some money and get the SS 12x. It is better and less expensive.

It is money well spent.

The SS is cheaper but the Sightron might have a little better glass.

It really depends on your eyes.

The SS has more adjustment.

The SS is built a little better.

The Vortex would not compare unless you were talking the PST than we are not talking apples and apples.

Sparky, have you compared them side to side? I'm very happy with my SS 12x, but can't say it's better or worse than the Sightron.

Good alternate recommendation for the OP though. I would "think" that the Mil Quad reticle on the SS would also be something to consider too.
If at first you don't secede...try..try again.

No I did not look through them side by side, but the Sightron 10x I looked through did not impress me. Where as I like the SS10x. Plus this is just a guess but I would assume that the 10x Sightron is similar to the 12x. But do not take my word for it read this review on them by Koshkin.

I would prefer the SS primarily due to the reticle in the Mil Quad version with 1/10 mil clicks. I have one in 16x that I like and I have the mil dot in 6x. I have also had the 20 and all three 10x versions the HD being an amazing optic. I have both styles of 3-9 and two of the 5-20x and of the whole line the 3-9 mil quad is absolutely the best value as it has great glass and is very comtetivively priced.  One of the features that the variables have is the knobs are held from the top by a single screw and are very easy to re-set.  The entire line is very high value for the cost because there is no middle man. Select power based on how the optic will be used.  Most people tend to buy a higher magnification than needed but it sure is nice to be able to see the holes in the target with the higher power ones. The 6x is the brightest in low light and as power increases physics kicks in and by the time you get to 20x42 they look a bit grey in low light but awesome in full daylight.  So if hunting in low light is likely a lower power is often a better choice or a variable so you can dial down the power to brighten the optic as the sun goes down.
If you buy one Im sure it wont be your last.

I own 2 SSs and like them pretty well. I also like my 3 Vipers very much, especially the 6x24. I just wanted to give Sightron a try, don't ask me why Loco

Thank you for all your inputs!

 Jump and Spin
I do like the fixed 6x.  Once you get to 6x tactical knobs start to make more sense.
