Sort of need some advice from my fellow shooters.  Much of my experience with scopes has been with Tasco, Weaver, Swift, and Leupold.  There are lots of new scopes out there and I know nothing about them.  I have a 10/22 with Volquartsen barrel, Kidd Trigger, Volquartsen Bolt, in a Fajen Thumbhole Stock.  I’m looking to get better optics on this gun (CenterPoint from Walmart).  My budget for the scope will be $400.

I want a variable power scope not exceeding 16 power.  Why 16, well that extra magnification comes in quite handy in our local .22 fun shoots and generally its low enough on the botton end for other things.  I guess I’m asking for best that can be done at that $400 price point.  Looking for clarity and a crosshair that is not so thick that it completely obliterates the target.  One inch tube to 30MM is fine but again, what are the best scopes at that $400 price point.

This has a little higher mag than you want.  But it is a steal right now.  above 16x sucks anyway as the exit pupil is to small.  http://swfa.com/Vortex-65-20x50-Viper-30mm-Rifle-Scope-P11233.aspx

I just got it for my 223 wssm and it is a pretty nice scope.  And for the money it is a super nice scope.

Would love to see some pics, sounds like a really nice set-up.

The Viper they linked to is a nice scope. "plus their customer support is top notch, and warranty is transferable"

I was going to ask about that. With your set-up you should group well out to 100-150 yards and that doesn't require as much glass as you're looking at.

Have you thought of a fixed power with adjustable objective?

There are a couple of posters here with 10x Super Snipers on 10/22's and they seem happy with them. I think they will focus down to 10 yards if memory serves me. "help me out guys, it is down to 10 yards isn't it?"

I like side focus so I'd go this route.

Yes the 10x SS is 10yds.

How about a 4-12x? I shoot to 200yds with a 3-9 Leupold VXII.

These are close to the exact build as you spoke of Top is Vol 1:7 SS for 60gr and 65gr subs. With almost same spec as you posted both Vol w/ Faj stocks.

Top 10X super sniper as this http://swfa.com/SWFA-SS-10x42-Tactical-Riflescope-P499.aspx but if you do not want that much magnification go http://www.samplelist.com/-P1570.aspx for 6x magnification.
The Bottom scope is close to this http://swfa.com/Hawke-6-24x50-Nite-Eye-SR-Riflescope-P41146.aspx but I would suggest this instead (as I own one now that is on another rifle and it is 3x the scope of the Hawke while the Hawke is no slouch the Vortex is a little better glass I believe) http://swfa.com/Vortex-65-20x50-Viper-30mm-Rifle-Scope-P11233.aspx but base mag might be too much  the only other thing you give up is the Lit Ret...

Not to go off on a tangent but the shooting you spoke of is some of the best shooting known to man.  I enjoy shooting the .22lr I just might sell every other one of my rifles... The problem is I like shooting past 300yrds and making a splash...  I know the .22lr can do 300 but it is like shooting a BB gun at that distance...
...

Well, I took a plunge on a scope.  Again, I like magnification for some of fun shoots we do so a 16 power or  better would help.  Bought the 4-16x50 Hawke EClipse scope.  I've never had a 30mm body scope before.

With my setup:Standard Ruger action with a Volquartsen Carbon Fiber .920 barrel, can you recommend some reasonable base and rings for my gun.  Of course, I would like the scope as close to the barrel as possible.

I'm not a big magnification guy, but do have a Hawke Eclipse 1.5-6 and love it. The glass is bright and clear, and I like the dot. Thunbs Up

I'm looking at doing a 10/22 custom. I have a couple of 10/22's that are tricked out some, but this next one will be a total one piece at a time number starting with one of these.

Hard to beat rimfire shooting. All the fun of the big boys without the recoil and costly ammo.

Not that I use it but does your Barrel Come with tapped holes, both of the ones above pictured have tapped holes and can have a mount directly to the barrel for the minimum clearance I would suggest that. I have the bottom scope high to take short shots or sighted shots for faster aquisition for squirrel hunting and use a neodymium magnet front sight "bead" and rear tapped into the barrel , other than that I have gone with custom rails from 2 local Smiths and have one that is adjustable MOA from 10-70 based on a pin system it is pretty slick.

For rimfire target/match shooting I'm a big fan of Weaver's Classic V24 6-24x42 with varmint reticle. The V16 is a great choice as well but I'm fond of the varmint-plex reticle below.
