Is this a bad idea?
I want to use weaver sure grip rings but they don't make them in 30mm
It will be on a R700 in .223 if that makes a difference.

...Or should i use other weaver style rings?
Are there any less exspensive than leupold PRW which cost $75!?! Whacko Shocked

Can't be done.  Even if you were to have screws long enough to engage threads, you wouldn't a 360 degree grip on the tube, creating pinch-points on the sides which would only damage the tube and would not hold up to firing.

Davis is correct; it absolutely will not work.  30mm is 4.6mm larger in diameter than 1" (25.4mm), so the 1" rings wouldn't even begin to fit over the 30mm tube, and even if it did, rings that do not precisely fit a scope tube will cause severe damage to the scope, assuming you ever did manage to force the rings over the tube.

Why would you even consider trying to do that in the first place when there are plenty of 30mm rings available for all mount base and receiver designs?  Why is your focus seemingly on trying to save a few $ on scope rings?  There are tons of 30mm rings that fit Weaver style bases, and they don't have to be Weaver brand in order to fit.  I guess I'm not understanding the problem here.

30 mm rings are a must in this application, 1" rings shouldn't even be a consideration.

With enough will and elbow grease, anything can be done.  Sure, it'll work, just crank down super hard on the 1" rings, something'll give and assure a nice, tight, possibly short-lived fit.

All you Negative Nancy's; "It can't be done."  Lucky for these United States, that wasn't our attitude back when Germany bombed Pearl Harbor.  Back then, we could do anything!

And if B Hussein Obama is our President soon, it won't matter anyway, the zombie apocalypse cometh!

And, because I know political banter is unacceptable unless in the confines of shooting: buy more ammo, guns, and optics; soon the Constitution may be amended to jump from First straight to Third.
